Who do you support on holidays? – Altogether Travel

Inclusion, different people as paper cut-outs and disability symbols repesented.

We support so many people with different support needs -

Such as seniors, physical and learning disabilities, sensory impairments, dementia, limited mobility, mental health issues, and often a combination of requirements.

Everyone is an individual, so we have an easy to complete Support Form which lets us know the main things you need support with:

  • By indicating Yes or No for things like assistance to get dressed, memory impairment or road safety, plus space to include as much detail as you like. We can also replicate your daily care plan from home, to have this in place at the destination of your choice.
  • This form asks if you have any allergies and for medication details, which you may wish to answer later but it is important to complete this before your holiday.
  • You can also tick or indicate what bathroom type you have at home to ensure suitable on holiday, and what equipment you use (if any). This lets us know any items you may be bringing from home, or if you may require equipment hire we can look into this for you.

If you are looking to plan a holiday for someone else, we can also offer an ‘About You’ sheet which is easy to read with images to help include the person in their holiday process. They can choose to highlight their favourite things or can prompt any thoughts about their holiday, so we can keep these things in mind or answer any extra questions they have.

You could also have your own conversation and pop things on the Support Form to mention anything, as you know them well.

The main thing is highlighting what’s important, and part of Altogether Travel being Care Registered is that we have a record of support needs to show we have taken these into consideration and met these requirements. This also helps us to match your Holiday Companion who has relevant experience to support you.

- - - - - - - - - -

If you are not someone’s main care giver and are unsure of support details, we ask that you pass on the form to their Support Worker for example, or provide contact info for us to request support details or a copy of their daily care plan.

Please note that we will not be provided any information without your permission, so you may need to confirm with or ask them to get in touch with us. Without us being provided with complete details, we are unable to identify which Companion will be best to support them or we might not be aware of important equipment which needs to be in place.

 - - - - - - - - - -

We have also supported people over the years with their support requirements changing over time – this may be with conditions developing, medication changes or reduced mobility. We review the support details from your previous holiday and ask for any updates, to ensure we have taken appropriate steps before the holiday to ensure everything is right for you.

We are delighted to continue supporting people to enjoy things they love as the years go on, with their interests or pace of holiday perhaps changing. Your Companion will be there throughout to help you get the best out of your trip, and are flexible for example if you would prefer to rest at the hotel in the afternoon or watch your favourite TV show at 5pm before dinner.

Travel Tip - Supporting local businesses

Bakery display with varieties of bread.

When you arrive at your hotel, check out the local bakery for the freshest bread and pastries around. You’ll find unique items in shops and some of the most authentic local foods with a market or family-run café.

You can also support local businesses by spreading the word – leave a review about your positive experience and this can encourage other visitors to check them out. This supports the destination and there may be new things next time you return 😊

Who will my Holiday Companion be? Supported Breaks – Altogether Travel

Two people holding both hands, sitting in separate armchairs.

There are many factors considered when it comes to who your Companion will be:

  • We match you with a Holiday Companion based on your support needs, so the person you go on holiday with is experienced in supporting people with similar requirements.
  • We also ask if you have a preference for a male or female Companion, as this helps to narrow down staff and keeps things similar to how you are supported at home.

- - - - - - - - - -

  • We then consider your interests –
If a Companion loves football too then we know you would both enjoy going on a stadium tour together, or if a Companion also loves musicals they would be great to see a show with. The more things you have in common then you are likely to get along well and have lots to talk about.

We want you to have a brilliant time away so we understand the company you have on holiday is important to you, and so if we can match you up well then you can have fun and relax away from home.

  • Age is also considered, but if you have similar interests then it’s true what they say – age is just a number 😊
  • If you have had a supported holiday with Altogether Travel before, then we would find out if the same Companion you have been away with previously is available as you already know each other. We even have a customer who has been on holiday with the same Companion over 20 times!

- - - - - - - - - -

  • After your holiday is booked, we then confirm availability of your Companion to match the dates you have in mind before making any hotel or travel arrangements.
If they are the available the week after for example, we can check you are happy to go ahead with the change of dates then get everything organised. If the holiday dates you have in mind are fixed, then we can find out if another Companion is available to keep the same dates.
  • With your Holiday Companion confirmed, we send you their Bio showing a photo along with your Booking Confirmation. This means you can put a face to the name and find out a bit about them.

- - - - - - - - - -

  • Your Companion will call you before the holiday to have a chat and discuss your holiday.
This is to introduce themselves and check you are happy with the details we have sent you – including things like the time they are meeting you, any activities or tickets booked and when you are likely to return home. If you have chosen car hire, times can be flexible but the Holiday Companion can update your family at breaks in the journey to let them know.
  • Meeting up before your holiday is optional (and charged separately to cover time and travel costs). We don’t arrange meetings without your holiday being booked, as with dates confirmed this will be the Companion who is supporting you. Sometimes people like to have a visit at home or meet at a local café to enjoy a coffee together.
